What Causes Burning Sensation in Legs?

Burning legs are generally due to a nerve or circulation problem in the legs. This kind of discomfort can be felt as a "pins and needles" sensation or one of heat that cannot be soothed. There are various causes for this, some of which are more common than others. Below are the most common causes:

Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the peripheral nerves,  this is the nerves that carry messages from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body such as the legs. It often leads to a burning sensation, tingling, numbness and weakness in the affected parts.

  • Causes: Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), alcohol abuse, infections, chemotherapy, and certain medications. It has also been found to be congenital and can be due to a lack of vitamins (such as B12).
  • Symptoms: Common symptoms are a burning leg, tingling, numbness, sharp pain or loss of feeling in the leg. In more severe cases, these symptoms may result in weakness of the muscles.

Poor Circulation (PAD): Peripheral Artery Disease

Poor circulation of the legs may be caused by a decrease in leg blood flow. Peripheral Artery Disease is one of the most common problems of poor blood circulation in which blood-carrying arteries may widen up or get blocked resulting in insufficient blood circulation.

  • Causes: Usually associated with the buildup of fatty deposits (plaque) in the arteries, atherosclerosis. Factors contributing to risk are smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • Signs and symptoms: Burning sensations, cramping, tired out legs in difficulty, skin coldness in the legs and skin discolouration may be seen. In severe cases, legs may develop ulcers/sores.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition in which the sciatic nerve – that travels down through the legs and from the lower back down through the back of the legs – is irritated or compressed. This inflammation may lead to pain, burning sensation, weakness and tingling sensations in the legs.

  • Causes: A herniated disc, spinal stenosis or a spur on the bone pressing on the sciatic nerve are common causes of Sciatica. It may also occur when the muscles get over-stretched or are damaged.
  • Symptoms: It can feel like a burning down one leg; it can be sharp, numb and tingling.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, often due to uncomfortable sensations, including burning. Weighing heavily on the body, it is evident in the evening/night and hinders sleep.

  • Causes: Understanding the exact cause for RLS is not yet complete and it is thought to be linked to the imbalance of Dopamine in the brain. It may also occur due to iron deficiency, kidney impairment, pregnancy or some drugs.
  • Symptoms: RLS is a desire to move the legs that is so great that it gives rise to a sensation of burning, tingling or crawling feelings. The symptoms are typically experienced at nighttime when lying or sitting for extended periods.

Spinal Cord Issues

Burning leg pain may occur in the event of compression of the nerves in the spinal cord as a result of a herniated disc or spinal cord injury. This is because the nerves passing through which transmit sensation to the legs pass through the spinal cord.

  • Causes: This can be caused by a herniated or slipped disc, spinal narrowing (spinal stenosis) or injury to the spine can compress the nerves and result in a burning sensation and other sensations in the legs.
  • Symptoms: It usually results in burning pain or numbness, weakness, or tingling in the legs, as well as pain or aching in the lower back. These tend to exacerbate when moving, bending or lifting.

Vitamin Deficiencies

Some vitamin deficiencies, such as Vitamin B12, can cause nerve damage and pain, a burning sensation, in the legs. One of the critical roles performed by B12 is in its involvement with nerve health. Deficiency may lead to peripheral neuropathy.

  • Causes: Some deficiency in vitamin B12 may be due to inadequate nutrition, malabsorption, or gastrointestinal disease.
  • Issues: A deficiency in B12 is related to a burning or tingling feeling in the legs, loss of strength, numbness and inability to walk.

Infections

Burning can occur in areas of infection from some nerve infections, including those caused by the varicella-zoster virus (causing shingles). This pain is usually localized to where the infection is.

  • Causes: You may experience burning sensation and discomfort throughout the legs and the body and may develop this condition following an infection by living organisms (such as viruses or bacteria) that affect the nervous system.
  • Symptoms: This may cause pain, burning, tingling or numbness, and a rash or blisters  particularly if it's shingles.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

Chronic venous insufficiency is a failure in the ability of the venous system of the legs to return blood to the heart, resulting in decreased circulation and stagnation of fluids in the lower leg. This can cause pain, burning and swelling up of the legs.

  • Causes: CVI occurs usually such as with damaged or weakened veins, which may be because of varicose veins, blood clots or extended standing.
  • Signs of CVI, most often well-established varicose veins, are burning, swelling, aching and heaviness in the legs.

Treatment Options for Burning Legs

Therapy for burning legs involves based on the cause of the burning sensation. There are various popular methods:

Medications

  • Pain Relievers: Mild pain associated with burning legs can be alleviated by taking over-the-counter pain medicines, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Antidepressant or Anticonvulsant: Gabapentin or amitriptyline, either antineuritic or antidepressant, may be used for neuropathic pain (nerve-related pain).
  • Topical Creams: Capsaicin creams or other topical treatments can help alleviate burning sensations in a particular area.

Physical Therapy

For natural causes like sciatica, exercise, such as physical therapy, may help build strong muscles, keep your posture good and also lower compression on the nerves.

Lifestyle Changes

  • Physical Activity: Walking and help prevent burning sensations when they are low in B12.
  • Physical activity will help you to get a better blood flow and help to decrease symptoms of diseases such as PAD and CVI.

Compression Therapy

Compression stockings can be used for various health issues such as chronic venous insufficiency to improve circulation to the legs, minimize swelling, pain and burning.

Surgery

Surgical procedures may be needed in severe cases to correct such structural problems as herniated discs, to drain blockages from the arteries and veins.

Conclusion

While burning sensation in any leg can be an upsetting and worrying experience, for many it is treatable once the cause is established. There are different treatments that can be used to manage the symptoms and correct the cause of vascular dementia, even though it may be caused by a problem with blood flow, nerve damage, or lack of vitamins. If the burning pain does not go away and is severe, please consult with doctors to learn about the cause and the necessary treatment.
