Famotidine is used to treat stomach ulcers (gastric and duodenal), erosive esophagitis (heartburn or acid indigestion), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a condition where the acid in the stomach washes back up into the esophagus.
Description
It is indicated in duodenal ulcer (a sore on the first part of the small intestine) and benign (non-cancerous) gastric ulcers (sores on stomach lining), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a rare digestive disorder that results in excessive gastric acid). It is also used to prevent relapse of duodenal ulcer and for prevention and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (a disorder that causes the digestive juices, foods, or fluids back up from the stomach into the esophagus).
Directions For Use
Take with or without meals.
Warnings
There is no evidence of risk is determined in pregnant females; therefore, caution is advised. Consult your doctor before taking this medication.
Precautions
Patients with impaired renal (kidney) function and gastric carcinoma (stomach cancer) are sensitive to the drug. Malignancies should be excluded before the use of this medicine. Blood count and liver functioning should be monitored regularly of patients who are on long term therapy.
