Introduction

To stop acid from rising up and causing restlessness, gaviscon uses sodium alginate, a thick substance that builds a defensive layer in the stomach. Gaviscon liquid also contains antacids, which turn redundant acid into water and other neutral substances.


It comes in oesophageal reflux suppressants which stops the stomach acid from travelling up into the food pipe (esophagus) by forming a defensive foam layer on top of stomach contents. Gaviscon are antacids that can bring down the acidity of stomach acid. It is indicated for bringing quick & long-lasting relief pain of heartburn and acid indigestion. It is also used for treating gastric affluence.

Do not take gaviscon within 2 hours before and after taking:

  • Antihistamines
  • Digoxin
  • Few antibiotics e.g., quinolones and tetracyclines
  • Iron tablet
  • Antifungal e.g., ketoconazole
  • Penicillamine (for rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Beta blockers
  • Steroids (for seditious and auto immune disease)
  • Antipsychotic drugs (for psychological health problems like bipolar disease and schizophrenia)
  • Chloroquine (for malaria)
  • Estramustine (for prostate cancer)
  • Bisphosphonates e.g., alendronic acid (to treat and help bone problems e.g osteoporosis)
  • Levothyroxine

Gaviscon can interact with other compounds but it all depends on the use of the drug. Some compounds potency combines with gaviscon like:

  • Calcium acetate
  • Phosphate supplements
  • Sodium polystyrene sulfonate

Disease interactions

There are few medical conditions in which gaviscon syrup is not safe to take, the medical conditions are given below,

  • Electrolyte imbalance

Food interactions

Directions

  • Shake completely before use
  • Analyse that the cap seal is intact before first using this liquid. For oral use.

Warnings and precautions

  • Take this drug only when doctor specified you during gestation.
  • This drug may cross into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

  • Never use this medicine if you are on a sodium-confined diet.
  • Do not use further than 16 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours.
  • Do not use the maximum proportion for further than 2 weeks except under the supervision and advice of a general physician.
  • Do not use if low proportion of phosphate in your blood.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are suffering from renal stones
  • Do not use this medicine if you are suffering from heart problems
  • Do not use this medicine if you are suffering from stroke
  • A blockage of the bowel with coprolite.
  • Make sure to inform your doctor if you are antipathetic to magnesium or to aluminum hydroxide. Gaviscon may have constituents that can cause hypersensitive responses.

Dosing

  • Grown-up and children over 12 age group: take 5-10 ml (one to two 5 ml spoonful) after feast and at bedtime, up to four times a day.
  • Children under 12 age group: should only be taken on medical advice.
  • Elderly: no dose revision is needed in this age group.
  • Hepatic impairment: no dose modification necessary.
  • Renal insufficiency: caution if profoundly restricted salt chloride diet is necessary.
