What is the Anomaly Scan?
It is a scan that is done in pregnancy for your baby so that your doctor can have a better look at it. It is done when your baby is around 20 weeks old in your womb. It is also known as a mid-pregnancy scan that helps to get a closer look at your baby and your womb as well. The growth of the baby will also be checked in this sonograph and the placement of placenta as well.
Anomaly Scan is mostly in the 20th week but it can also be done in any time between 18 weeks and 21 weeks. This image will show the baby's face and hands at 20 weeks.
When is an Anomaly Scan performed?
This scan is performed anywhere between 20-24 weeks of gestation. It is one of the most important scans and used to examine all the parts of the fetal body and to check for any abnormalities. Your scan will be done in 45 minutes. Sometimes it takes an hour for a scan to process.
What does an Anomaly Scan detect?
Following things are detected in an Anomaly Scan.
- The baby’s brain and head structure is measured in size and
shape. If there are any brain problems then they will be visible, like down
syndrome.
- The face of the baby is checked for symptoms of cleft lip.
It is very hard to detect.
- The spice of the baby is also checked in cross section to
make sure that all the bones align and if the skin is covering all the spine or
not.
- The abdominal wall will be checked to make sure that
internal organs are at front.
- The heart of the baby is checked to detect if there are any
heart problems or if the heart is healthy or not. The valves, ventricles, and
chambers will be examined by the sonographer.
- If the stomach is swelled then it will also be detected in
the scan and it happens because sometimes the fetus swallows some of the
amniotic fluid in, which is seen in their stomach as a black bubble.
- The placenta, umbilical cord, and fluid in the womb of the
mother will also be checked for a lot of things.
- The baby's kidneys will be checked. The sonographer will check that your baby has two kidneys, and that urine flows freely into their bladder. If your baby's bladder is empty, it should fill up during the scan and be easy to see.
