What is the CRP test?
CRP is a protein that is synthesized by liver. Whenever there is an inflammation in any part of the body, its level rises. A blood test can be done to check your C-reactive protein levels. The high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) test is more sensitive than a normal C-reactive protein test. It means the high-sensitivity test can find smaller increases and changes in C-reactive protein as compared to a standard test.
It can also detect narrowing of arteries.
When is it performed?
Followings are the reasons after which your doctor might suggest you to get the CRP test done.
To look for the chances of infection.
- Help diagnose a chronic inflammatory disease, such as
rheumatoid arthritis.
- For the detection of Lupus.
- Learn your risk of heart disease.
- To check if you are at a risk of 2nd heart attack or any
heart disease.
What does it detect?
Following are the things that can be detected in the test:
- If the level of CRP is high in blood, then it can indicate
that you might have a chance to experience a heart attack soon.
- If you have already experienced one, then you might
experience another one soon if the values are not stable.
- The risk of a heart attack can be reduced by controlling the
levels of CRP in blood.
- There is no way in which this test can show inflammation.
- It indicates a 10% to 20% chance of having a heart attack
within the next 10 years in people with high values. This is called as an intermediate
risk.

When should I know the results of this Test?
The time when you get the results depends on from where you get your test done. It can be done within anywhere from a few hours to a day. But most probably the reports are compiled within an hour or a few hours. These days, you can also have a look at your test results online.
What are the CRP Test Results range?
The unit used for the measurement of C-reactive protein is milligrams
per liter (mg/L).
If the values of the protein are greater than 8 mg/L or 10
mg/L, then they are considered high. The range will also depend on the fact,
from where you are getting our test done. High results can be due to the
following reasons:
- Inflammation
- Infection
- Injuries
- Chronic Diseases
Followings are the standard ranges of this test:
If the values of the test are less than 2.0 mg/L, then the
risks of heart diseases are lower.
If the values of the test are equal to or greater than 2.0 mg/L, then the risks of heart diseases are higher.
But the CRP values keep on fluctuating from time to time
depending on various factors. The CHD’s management and assessment should always
be done after getting multiple CRP tests. Because it’s values can fluctuate.
After 2 tests, average is calculated and then results are concluded.
