What is the MRCP Test?
MRCP is basically Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). It is a Type of MRI test that draws results for hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems, including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, and its duct. It is completely non-invasive and doctors use it to diagnose various types of medical conditions. In this test, powerful magnetic fields and radio frequencies are used to portray an image of organs and systems inside the human body. Radiations like x-rays are not used in this test.
You might be asked to drink or eat before the test starts but don’t do so until you are asked. You will also be asked to wear a loose gown and to take off any metal objects or jewelry.
When is an MRCP Test performed?
If you are already dealing with a Liver, Gallbladder, bile, or pancreas disease/condition then you will be prescribed an MRCP test. If you have an un-explained abdominal pain then you can also get this test done. It is also possible that you were having some symptoms and then your doctor prescribes you an MRCP Test.
What does an MRCP Test detect?
Here’s what an MRCP test does.
- It helps the doctor or radiologist to examine diseases of
the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and pancreatic duct. They may be
checked for tumors, stones, inflammation or infection.
- For patients who have pancreatitis, this test helps to
detect the underlying disease. A medication is used in this case but use it
only if your doctor prescribes it.
- If you have a throbbing abdominal pain then this test will
help you identify the cause.
- help to diagnose unexplained abdominal pain.
- You can also get a cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) that is
an alternative option. It does the same job.
What are the benefits of this test?
There are many benefits of MRCP test like:
- One of the best parts about this technique is that it is
non-invasive and there is no exposure of different radiations.
- It helps to provide images of various organs inside the
human body like heart, liver, pancreas and many other organs. It helps to check
the overall health of these organs and check for cancer as well.
- It is a valuable tool that helps to diagnose different
conditions and diseases as well. Like heart and vascular disease, stroke, and
joint and musculoskeletal disorders as well.
- The structure and working of an organ can also be evaluated
via this test.
- Bone abnormalities can also be detected in this test.
- MRCP test can produce images comparable to those obtained by
a more invasive exam called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography ERCP
without its associated risks including pancreatitis, or inflammation of the
pancreas, perforation of pancreatic and bile ducts and bowel, and the risks for
intravenous sedation required for ERCP.
When should I know the results of the MRCP Test?
When you will get an MRCP Test done, a radiologist will examine it all and then the radiologist will compile a report and get it done within a few hours. After that, you can have it.
The doctor will examine your reports and then he will tell
you your diagnosis or if you have any problem in any of your organs or not.
