What is the BERA test?

BERA is Brain Evoked Response Audiometry. This test is a hearing examination for children aged from 1 to 3 years. For those who are younger, an Oto Acoustic Emission (OAE) examination can be done. They conclude if a child’s hearing functionality is within normal limits or not. In case, BERA test results are abnormal, then further examination will continue to examine the prediction of the hearing threshold of a kid. So that, the kid can get hearing rehabilitation as early as possible by using hearing aids. The whole testing procedure lasts for about 1 hour.

When is a BERA Test performed?

It is almost an impossible task to determine and indicate a hearing loss in such young children. Because hearing loss can further lead to speech, language, cognitive, social, and emotional problems. So, it is better that you should get this test done at an early age once you suspect that your child might have a hearing loss.

Healthy hearing is concluded as when the auditory nerve is able to transmit sound impulses from the ear to the brain at a specific speed. In the BERA test, information will be recorded regarding the transmission of impulses. Despite these things, this test is also used in otoneurologic diagnosis. People who have unilateral or asymmetrical hearing loss should get this test done. The examination will further indicate the type of damage or abnormality that a kid has.

What does a BERA Test detect?

Following things are detected by this test.

  1. The source of a hearing loss can be located.
  2. The test will detect abnormalities from cranial nerve to the brainstem.
  3. It can detect hyperactive, mentally illness, or other youngsters who might not respond to traditional audiometry.
  4. Asymmetric hearing loss.

Children who have the history of congenital hearing illnesses are at risk of the following things.

  1. Hyperbilirubinemia-high production of bilirubin
  2. Head deformities or abnormalities
  3. Head injuries
  4. Head deformities or abnormalities

How is BERA test performed?

Patient does not have to do anything in this test except than lying down. They should be in calm attuite like sleeping. Children who won’t sleep, a little anesthesia is given. But it happens rarely. Electrodes will be placed on the patient’s head and behind the ear during the BERA test procedure. After completion of this test, the patient will be heard various sounds through headphones. The changes in brain electrical activity (EEG) will be measured in this test in the provision of acoustic stimuli.

When should I know the results of this Test?

You will get the results of this test in a few hours. But most probably, it takes a day for a formal report to get concluded. The time when you will receive your test results will depend on the place from where you will get your tests done. These days, with advanced technology, you can receive your test results on your phone.
