What is the CT FNA Biopsy?
FNA or Fine needle aspiration is a form of minimally-invasive tissue sampling. The technique used is ultrasound with a targeting instrument. In this technique, a CT, MRI, or fluoroscopy could potentially be used but it will depend on the situation of the patient and health conditions. The ultimate guidance of imaging proves to be useful in sampling deep or diffuse lesions. Even when the lesions are palpable, and discrete; imaging will allow controlled sampling of different regions surrounding the lesions.
A pathologist will take the sample of cells by fine needle aspiration. Once the sample is taken, the cells will become disorganized and will no longer maintain the spatial arrangement that they had originally in the lesion. If a spatial organization is required then a biopsy should be done.

What are the complications of this test?
This is not a kind of procedure where a patient will have to
worry about various complications from happening. This is so because
complications are rare with FNA procedures. The most dangerous thing that you
can think of happening after an aspiration is bleeding or a minimal infection. Most
of the times, bleeding occurs when deeper abdominal aspirations are done. But
its still rare.
Cracking thyroid is a very rare complication of FNA biopsy
of thyroid nodules.
The other rare complication occurs in Hurthle cell neoplasms 1.
What are the Contradictions of FNA?
There are some contraindications to FNA, followings are a
few of them.
- Uncorrectable coagulopathy or platelet disorder. This is the
most possible one.
- A more relative one includes an inability to lie down
- Difficult controlling rate and depth of respiration
- Higher anxiety rates
- Inability of a pathologist to reach the lesions with needle
without damaging structures
- And reaching to a conclusion where a biopsy is required.
When should I know the results of this Test?
You will probably get the results of this test in a day. But most probably, it takes a few days for a formal report to get concluded. The time when you will receive your test results will depend on the place from where you will get your tests done.
