What is the Holter Monitor?

It is a portable small monitor device that is used to record the rhythms of the heart. The main purpose of it is to indicate the potential risks of arrhythmia. Arrhythmias are characterized by irregular heartbeats. This test is mainly done when a normal EKG or ECG is not providing enough details that doctors require. So, to know more about the heart condition, this test is done. A long-term monitor will be required if the irregular heartbeats are infrequent. There are many smart personal devices like smartwatches, that come with this option.

When is it performed?

A Holter monitor is required if your health advisor or some professional worker suggests that you need it. The following are the cases when you need them.

• You might need it if you have an arrhythmia. Arrhythmias are characterized by irregular heartbeats.
• If you faint without any reason every now and then.
• Different types of heart conditions.

What does it detect?

You will have to get an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) before getting a Holter monitor. The procedure of ECG is very quick and easy. It is done to check the heart's rhythm. Frequent arrhythmias cannot be detected by an ECG. These can be detected by a Holter monitor. If standard Holter monitoring doesn't capture an irregular heartbeat, a device called an event monitor may be recommended to record heartbeats over several weeks. This can also detect and indicate the starting levels of various heart diseases.

What are the risks of this test?

There are no major risks in wearing the Holter monitor. For a few people, it can be uncomfortable for a few people because it can cause a minor discomfort or skin irritation where the sensors were placed. Other electrical appliances cannot affect this Holter monitor. But it is possible for some devices may interrupt the signal from the electrodes to the Holter monitor.

You have to avoid the use of the following devices if you have any:

• Electric blankets
• Electric razors and toothbrushes
• Magnets
• Metal detectors
• Microwave ovens
• You also have to keep cellphones and portable music players at least 6 inches from the Holter monitor for the same reason.

When should I know the results of this Test?

You will get the results of this test in a few hours. But most probably, it takes a day for a formal report to get concluded. The time when you will receive your test results will depend on the place from where you will get your tests done. These days, with advanced technology, you can receive your test results on your phone.

Holter Monitor Test Results?

The health care providers will view the Holter monitor test results and discuss them with you as well. The Information from Holter monitor testing will tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or not.

If there were no irregular heart issues then your doctor will recommend you a wireless monitor or an event recorder, both of which can be worn longer than a standard Holter monitor. Event recorders are similar to Holter monitors and generally require you to push a button when you feel symptoms.

If a problem is found, then your doctor will move towards diagnosis and intervention.
