Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) & Tympanaometry (Tymp) (Audiology) at Capital Diagnostic Centre
What is the Pure Tone Audiometry PTA Audiology?
In the Pure Tone Audiometry PTA Audiology, hearing sensitivity is tested using behavioral testing methods. In this test, all the peripheral and central auditory systems are tested. The PTTs- Pure-tone thresholds will indicate a softest audible sound 50% of the time. The sensitivity will be plotted on to a graph from where its frequency will be checked.
When is it performed?
It is performed when doctors see that there is an evident sign of hearing loss.
What does this test detect?
Its main purpose is to detect if a person is able to hear (0–25 dB) normal levels. If not then it will be concluded as a hearing loss.
How is this test Performed?
It is not mandatory that 1 test will conclude everything and
sometimes several tests are required. Here is how this test is performed.
- The patient will wear earphones which will be attached to
the audiometer. At one time, pure tones will be delivered.
- Then you will have to signal when you hear a sound.
- The graph will be drawn.
- To test bone conduction, device called a bone oscillator is
placed against the mastoid bone.
- The speech audiometry will test your ability to detect and
repeat spoken words.
- The test of Immittance audiometry will measure if the function of the ear drum and the flow of sound is reaching the middle ear or not under different pressures.
When should I know the results of this Test?
If you want to know, when will you get the report of the test then you need to keep one thing in mind that all the places that offer tests have different time when they compile specific reports. The timing will be different at all the places. The minimum time in which you can get your reports is a few hours but it can take up to a day.
PTA Audiometry Test Results range
Your PTA Audiometry test can have two conclusive results.
Normal Results because:
- You were able to hear both whispers and normal speech as
well. If you were able to hear a ticking watch as well, then your PTA results
are normal.
- It is also normal if you were able to hear a tuning fork
through air.
- In this test, if you were able to hear tones from 250 to
8,000 Hz at 25 dB or lower than your tests will be normal.
Abnormal Results because:
- There are various types of hearing losses. In some of them,
you can’t hear high tones, in the other ones, your hearing will be impaired for
low tones. Well! In some type, you lose only air or bone conduction. If it is
difficult for you to hear below 25 dB then it is a sign that you have hearing
loss.
- The type and degree of hearing loss that you have will give
you a hint about if you can get a recovery or not.
Here are some conditions that can negatively affect or
interrupt the results of the test.
- Acoustic neuroma
- Acoustic trauma from a very loud or intense blast sound
- Age-related hearing loss
- Alport syndrome
- Chronic ear infections
- Labyrinthitis
- Ménière disease
