What are these scans?

The OBS scan is also known as the fetal ultrasound in which you can find out the gender and the health of your baby that you are expecting to arrive soon. It will tell you the gestational age of the baby as well. After that in the 2nd trimester, an Anomaly scan is done so that your doctors can have a better look at the fetus. It is done in 2nd trimester but mainly around the 20th week to 24 weeks. They will also have a look around your womb and check for abnormalities. The sonographer will make sure to check your baby with attention so that abnormalities can be ruled out.

When are these ultrasounds performed?

These ultrasounds are done in the second trimester anywhere between 20-24 weeks of gestation. These are one of the most important scans and used to examine all the parts of the fetal body and to check for any abnormalities. Your scan will be done in 45 minutes.

What does these ultrasounds can detect?

Following things are detected in these ultrasounds.

1. The gender of your baby will be detected.
2. The gestational age of your baby will be determined.
3. The doctor will check if the brain size and structure is normal or not.
4. The doctor will try to rule out the probability of cleft lip. It is very hard to detect.
5. Your baby’s spine will also be checked. If it is normal or has any complications.
6. The sonographer will check if the skin is covering the whole spine or not.
7. The placement of internal organs will be checked.
8. All the chambers and valves of the fetus heart will be checked.
9. The doctor will also check if the stomach appears normal or is swelled because sometimes the fetus swallows some of the amniotic fluid in, which can be seen in their stomach as a black bubble.
10. The placenta, umbilical cord, and fluid in the womb of the mother will also be checked for a lot of things.
11. The baby's kidneys will be checked.  The sonographer will check that your baby has two kidneys, and that urine flows freely into their bladder. If your baby's bladder is empty, it should fill up during the scan and be easy to see.

When should I know the results of this Test?
