What is the Liver Function Test (LFT) Test?

A Liver Function Test (LFT) is also known as a Liver Panel, and they measure and indicate the overall health of the liver. The liver Function Test measures various enzymes, proteins, and other substances produced by the liver. Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) is an enzyme produced by the liver. If its quantity is more than normal, there is severe liver damage. When the liver has damage, this enzyme leaks and dissolves in blood. A Liver Function Test with GGT can be done with a single blood sample. A Liver Function Test (LFT) checks the following enzymes and proteins.

• Alanine transaminase (ALT)
• Bilirubin
• Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
• Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT)
• Aspartate transaminase (AST)
• L-lactate dehydrogenase (LD)
• Prothrombin time (PT)
• Albumin and total protein

When is an LFT performed?

If you experience or have the following symptoms/condition, you must perform the Liver Function Test LFT.

• Jaundice
• Diarrhea
• Nausea and vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Dark-coloured urine
• Fatigue
• Light-coloured stool
• If you also have a family history of liver disease
• Alcohol condition or Alcohol addiction

What are the benefits of this test?

There are many benefits of getting the Liver Function test. If your GGT is more, you will know if there has been a leakage of this specific enzyme into your blood. It also tells if your liver is healthy on not. But a Liver Function test does not indicate a liver disease every time. There can be other things, like any deficiency or toxicity of some proteins you have been eating.

This test is also beneficial in the way that it indicates jaundice and various types of hepatitis as well. You can also get an overview of your total liver health. It can also indicate a waste excretion problem, if there is any.

When should I know the results of the LFT test?

The Liver function test does not take that much time, and you can get your results anywhere between a few hours to a day. It depends on where you get your test done, and it is not the case if you wonder if it will take more days.

Here are the rest result ranges for the Liver Function Test.

• ALT can be 7 to 55 units per litre (U/L).
• AST can be 8 to 48 U/L
• ALP can be 40 to 129 U/L
• Albumin can be 3.5 to 5.0 grams per deciliter (g/dL)
• Total protein should be 6.3 to 7.9 g/dL
• Bilirubin should be 0.1 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)
• GGT can range from 8 to 61 U/L
• LD can range from 122 to 222 U/L
• PT can range from 9.4 to 12.5 seconds

These are the typical ranges of an adult person, and the contents might vary for kids.
