What is the NCS EMG test?
EMG stands for electromyography and NCS stands for nerve conduction study. Both of them are done at the same time. When your muscles move, the nerve signals get to work from your brain. Electromyography measures the response of muscles to those signals and it notes how well they respond. If there is a problem with response then you will be diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder.
Nerve Signals are the electrical impulses that travel all along your nervous system. Sometimes, there can be problem with this activity and this movement can cause pain, tingling, or weakness in your muscles. This is what these tests detect and the amount of damage as well.
When is a NCS EMG performed?
Muscle numbness and soreness is a natural thing if it happens once in a while. It might happen when you are involved in too much physical work. But if the soreness and tenderness is not going away and the reason is not clear for this to happen then these tests are prescribed.
People who experience the following symptoms are prescribed
this test.
- Pain or cramping
- Tingling or numbness
- Muscle weakness
What does this test detect?
Both of the tests are diagnostic tests when doctors need to
know about what is wrong with you. They can also help rule out diseases that
you don’t have. EMG and NCS detects the following;
- Neuromuscular diseases, like muscular dystrophy
- Nerve problems in the spine, like as a herniated disk
- Nerve problems elsewhere in the body, for instance, carpal
tunnel syndrome
- Peripheral nerve problems in your arms or legs
- Pinched nerves
- Guillain-Barré syndrome-when your immune system is attacking
your nerve impulses.
What are the benefits of this test?
The main benefit that you will get from the test is that you will know if the movement of your muscles are is normal or not. In situation of any diseases, it will not be normal. Like in cases of muscular disorders.
When should I know the results of this Test?
The time when you receive the results of this tests depends on the place from where you get this test done but usually it may take from a few hours to a day. There is no specific selected time for the result of this test. But get the reports within a day. You can also view your test reports online if you cannot pick them up.
Test Results range?
If the results are normal then:
The muscles with be resting normally and will not show any type of electrical activity at the EMG recording. When the contraction occurs, they will show an electrical activity on an EMG recording. It will be like a wave line or action potential. The size of the line or wave will give your doctor an idea about your muscle’s ability to respond to the nerve that controls it. The action potential of a normal EMG is smooth.
If the results are not normal then:
The results will be up in two ways. In first one, the muscle
with be showing electrical activity even at rest. And when at movement, the
muscle contracts, abnormal electrical activity during contraction will be
recorded. The action potential of an abnormal EMG will not be smooth.
