What Is the Widal Test?
A quick serological test called Typhoid (also known as Widal
Test) is used to diagnose typhoid disease. The Typhoid test is a dot ELISA kit
that looks for IgM and IgG antibodies against the Salmonella typhi outer
membrane protein (OMP). Within two to three days of infection, the typhoid test
turns positive and distinguishes between IgM and IgG antibodies. Based on the existence
of particular IgM and IgG antibodies to a particular 50KD OMP, the test is
conducted.
Typhoid fever, also known as enteric fever, is an acute, potentially fatal infection that causes a fever and is spread by consuming food or water that has been tainted with the feces of someone who has the bacteria Salmonella typhi or S. paratyphoid.
Why this Test Is Performed?
Typhoid typically comes with diarrhea, a rising fever, and rose-colored rashes. Two screening procedures are frequently used to find bacterial antibodies. How to interpret the results of a Widal test and what is the normal range?
The titer, a measurement of the dilution at which the agglutination response takes place, is the outcome of the Widal test. The more antibodies there are in the blood, the higher the titer. The titers are expressed as a ratio that reflects the dilution level at which the reaction occurred, such as 1:20 or 1:80.
For both the O and H antigens of S. Typhi and S. paratyphoid, a titer of less than 1:20 falls within the Widal test normal range. A titer of 1:20 or higher denotes the existence of antibodies and may imply a current or past bacterial infection.
