What is the HSG Test?
It is also known as Hysterosalpingography. It is basically a form of X-ray test that is used to determine the internal shape of the uterus and to show if the fallopian tubes healthy of if they are blocked or twisted. In this test, a thin tube is threaded through the vagina and cervix. A contrast material is a substance that is injected in the uterus. After that a series of X-rays, fluoroscopy, follows the dye. This appears white on X-ray when it moves into the uterus and then into the tubes. Any of the abnormalities with in the reproductive system of the female, if present will be highlighted. This happens when the dye spills into the pelvic cavity, where the body resorbs it which gives a better view.
When is a HSG Test performed?
The perfect time to perform this hsg test is right after your period before ovulation process begins. This is to reduce the risk of you getting the test done while being pregnant. Your doctor might also ask you to get this test done on your first day of your period for the second test in the series.
This test does not involve general anesthesia and performed when you are awake. You will not have to fast for this test or eat something special. Some doctors prefer antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

The main purpose for which HSG is done is to determine fertility status. It also shows if you have any blockage in your fallopian tube or uterus. This could make it harder for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg. It also helps your OB/GYN look at the shape of your uterus, which affects fertility as well.

In some women with history of miscarriages, an abnormally shaped uterus is to blame. An HSG test can also show fibroids or polyps that could get in the way of an embryo implanting and growing.
