What is the EEG Test?

Electroencephalogram or EEG is used to detect various abnormalities in the waves of your brain or in the electrical activity of the brain. In this test of EEG, electrodes consisting of small metal discs with thin wires are pasted onto your scalp. The electrodes will detect minor and tiny electrical charges that result from the activity of your brain cells. On the screen, these charges will be amplified and will be printed out on paper. Your healthcare provider then interprets the reading.  

The communication of brain cell occurs via electrical impulses. They stay active most of the time even when you are not active like when you are sleeping. This activity of the brain shows up as wavy lines on an EEG recording. For epilepsy, EEG is one of the main diagnostic tests. It is also useful in diagnosing other brain disorders

When is an EEG performed?

It is performed when you are experiencing some specific symptoms and your doctor prescribes you to get an EEG done.

What does an EEG detect?

Any type of changes in the brain activity can be detected in an EEG. It is useful in diagnosing brain disorders especially epilepsy or other disorders with seizure. It is also useful in diagnosing and detecting the following.

• Brain tumors
• Brain damage from head injury
• Brain dysfunction that can have a variety of causes (encephalopathy)
• Sleep disorders
• Inflammation of the brain (herpes encephalitis)
• Stroke
• Sleep disorders
• Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

In people who are in coma, an EEG detects if a person is brain dead or not. It is also used to help find the right level of anesthesia for someone in a medically induced coma.

What are the risks of this test?

An EEG can be risky if you have the following conditions. It is preferred to not get an EEG in such situations.

1. Hypoglycemia or Low blood sugar that is caused by fasting can create complications during test because glucose is what your brain cells rely on and they don’t move towards tertiary and secondary sources.
3. Don’t make any body or eye movement during the tests. It can interfere in the results of the test. It does not happen quite often but is possible.
5. It can be risky to perform this test in the presence of bright lights and especially the very flashy ones.
7. Sedatives are a risk.
8. Don’t get this test done if you have oily hair.
9. If you took caffeine, in the form of cola or coffee then postpone your test to some other day. It is considered unsafe to get an EEG when you are on caffeine.

When should I know the results of this Test?

The time when you get the results depends on where you get your test done. It can be anywhere from a few hours to a day. But most probably the reports are compiled within an hour or a few hours. These days, you can also have a look at your test results online.

Test Results range?

Doctors perform the EEG test and then send it over to that one doctor who ordered it. There are no specific ranges for which doctors are looking for. They access the reports from many points of views.
