Dexa Scan (BMD & Whole Body Composition) at Chughtai Lab
Known as: Dual Energy x-ray Absorptiometry,Bone Densitometry,DXA
What is the DEXA Scan?
DEXA scan is known as Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. It is either known as DXA or DEXA. This test is done to measure the Bone Mineral Density and to check the strength of bones. The man reason to perform this test is to check if a person has osteoporosis or not. Or if that person is at risk of osteoporosis or not. It also determines if your bone is prone to fractures or not.
The two main areas focused by the DEXA scan are hip bones or
spine. If there is a medical liability and you can’t get the test done in those
regions then you can get it done at the forearms as well. This will give an
idea to your doctor about your bone mineral density and what is the probability
of you getting any bone of your body fractured when it is under impact or
anything.
When is a DEXA Scan performed?
Followings are the conditions when a DEXA scan is mandatory.
- For Women who are 65 or older
- For women who are 60 or older and those who have a higher
chance of getting a fracture
- People dealing with osteopenia
- People dealing with osteoporosis
What does it detect?
The main things that this test detects include:
- Measurement of bone mineral density.
- Calcium status of your bones.
- Phosphorus status of your bones.
- The probability of you surviving a fracture and its healing
time.
How is it performed?
The scan will only take 10 to 20 minutes and it will not take any longer. The procedure will be painless and you will be exposed to very less radiation. You will not have to pass through a hollow cylindrical structure, instead, you will lie on a table until the x-ray is done. 2 types of beams are produced in this process. One is low beam and the other one is a high beam.
When should I know the results of this Test?
You will get the results of this test in a few hours. But most probably, it takes a day for a formal report to get concluded. The time when you will receive your test results will depend on the place from where you will get your tests done. These days, with advanced technology, you can receive your test results on your phone.
Test Results range?
The results of DEXA are measured in terms of T-scores. They
indicate how higher or lower your bone density is than that of a healthy
30-year-old healthy female of that age. This is the age when the bones are the
strongest. Lower scores indicate weaker bones and risk of osteoporosis as well.
Here are the details of the T-scores.
- Normal bone density will be if T-score is -1.0 or above.
- Low bone density or osteopenia will be indicated at T-score
between -1.0 and -2.5.
- The osteoporosis will be indicated and diagnosed at the T-score
of -2.5 or lower.
Sometimes you will get a z score and it will be for the same
purpose.
Sometimes doctors will give you another DXA scan result -- a
Z score. It compares your bone density to a normal score for a person of your
same age and body size.
