What is the Transvaginal Ultrasound?

In this ultrasound test, a high frequency sound waves are used to create different images of your different parts of body organs. These images will help to identify different conditions, abnormalities, and diseases. This is an internal examination because the transvaginal word means “through vagina”. The transvaginal ultrasound is also known as an endo-vaginal ultrasound. The main purpose of this ultrasound is to examine the female reproductive organs. It includes the reproductive organs like uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and vagina.

This is not like a regular or normal abdominal or pelvic ultrasound in which ultrasound wand is used on the outside of the pelvis.  In this procedure, your doctor or a technician will insert an ultrasound probe at around 2 or 3 inches inside your vaginal canal. This is the most basic procedure.

When is a Transvaginal Ultrasound performed?

6. To confirm an early pregnancy.
