Because when the blood has less calcium, the blood sucks it through bones and the bones start to get soft. But the measurement of calcium in blood is done in this test. The main purpose of the serum calcium test is to screen or monitor bone diseases or calcium-regulation disorders. This test is also known as: Ca 2; Calcium - serum; and Ca .
When is a Calcium Serum performed?
Calcium is required by all of the cells to function. It is crucial for bone. It is very important for the activity of neurons and muscles, basically in neuromuscular activity. If there is a deficiency of calcium in blood then it can cause hyperexcitable nerves and muscles. Excess calcium has the opposite effect and it can cause stones and toxicity. This test is performed when the doctor suspects deficiency or toxicity.

How is the test performed?
When you will visit a lab for calcium serum test, you will be asked to give a sample of blood from the bend of your elbow. The site will be cleaned with an antiseptic first and then an elastic band will be placed around the upper arm to apply pressure and cause the vein to swell with blood. Then the needle will be inserted to draw blood. It will be collected in an air-tight vial or a syringe. Then, a band aid will be applied and band will be removed to restore circulation of the blood. Then the blood will be tested for the calcium.
